Material: the chromatic scale, and dominant seventh chords. The cool and artificial division of tonal space, and one of the most concrete and loaded configurations to occur in music (both largely a Baroque invention).
Dreams: about the expressiveness of individual intervals, about music with sharp contours, about music that has a kind of elementary energy, but is not shy about its mechanical (that is, human) origins and makes no pretence of having emerged from the forest (a certain tendency towards this kind of pretence can be found in many a spectral music work, and Material and Dreams can be seen, to some extent, as a parody of spectralism – it uses some of its emblematic musical gestures, but these are made in the ostensibly "anti-natural", "counter-spectral" material.)
However, it would also be possible to dream about how, if Descartes had a dog, we might be living in a rather better world today. A cat would also have been good, or maybe even a rat.

Materiál: chromatická stupnice a dominantní septakord. Chladné a umělé rozměření tónového prostoru plus jeden z nejkonkrétnějších a nejzatíženějších útvarů, jaké se v hudbě vyskytují (obojí je do značné míry barokní patent).
Sny: o expresivitě jednotlivých intervalů, o hudbě s ostrými konturami, o hudbě, která má jakousi elementární energii, ale nestydí za svůj původ v mechanickém (to jest lidském) a nepředstírá, že vyrostla v lese (k tomuto předstírání má někdy sklony například spektrální hudba a Material and Dreams je v jistém ohledu parodií spektralismu – zmocňuje se některých jeho emblematických gest, ale realizuje je v onom velmi "antispektrálním", ostentativně "nepřírodním" materiálu).
Také by se ovšem dalo snít o tom, že kdyby byl býval měl Descartes psa, mohli jsme dnes žít v trochu lepším světě. Kočka by určitě taky byla dobrá, možná i potkan.
